Research Centers
Although the Faculty of Protestant Theology at LMU Munich is among Germany's youngest theological faculties, it has been regarded by German-speaking theological circles from the outset as an institution pursuing a particularly active research policy and leading in many fields of the subject; here, Protestant traditions encounter the challenges of today - and specifically those of urban culture - in an interdisciplinary spirit which is open to modernity.

Munich is unique in Germany for its Protestant press archive and systematic research into the history of the Protestant press. The archive of Protestant newspapers and magazines, which was brought to Munich in 1997, covers the entire scope of Protestant publications since 1848.

The EvAKiZ is an institution of the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD) at LMU Munich and focuses on research into 20th-century church history. It reappraises church policies during the Third Reich, publishes the reports of the Council of the EKD and edits the EKD Church Yearbook.

The Research Unit, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and located partly in Göttingen and partly in Munich, initiated its research on the ethical role of Protestantism in the Federal Republic of Germany in June 2013.

The Competence Center for Ethics was opened on 20 July 2005. Researchers from the fields of Catholic and Protestant theology, law, economics, medicine, philosophy, sociology, biology and other faculties work here together on ethics-related issues.

In the Graduate School "Distant Worlds" important areas in the field of Ancient Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich join together with the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften along with five Munich museums and collections to promote junior research in Ancient Studies.

Projects within the responsibility of the Chair of Systematic Theology and Ethics (Prof. Graf) include the collected critical works of the theologian and cultural scientist Ernst Troeltsch (1865–1923).

The Institute's work "focuses on ethical issues from the fields of biotechnology and genetic engineering, medicine, information and communications technologies and energy technology and their cost-effective application". Activities include conferences, working groups and doctoral and post-doctoral thesis projects.

The research center at the Chair of Practical Theology II (Prof. Schwab) runs a range of research projects investigating the relationship of young people to the church and religion, and develops ideas for action by the church in schools and communities.
